Johnny Manziel, Tonya Harding are new faces of discount insurance

“We know that life doesn’t always go according to plan, and if there’s one thing that we all deserve, it’s a second chance.”

With a focus on second chances, Direct Auto’s new national advertising campaign features several celebrity spokespersons who “stumbled” at the high point of their careers.

The spots include controversial Olympic figure skater, Tonya Harding; ex-pro football player, Johnny Manziel; and rapper-producer, Fat Joe.

“In choosing celebrities, we wanted to hone in on people who share the same everyday issues our audience faces. Sure, they’ve risen to great heights in their careers and lives, but, at the end of the day, they’re just like everyone else,” said Nick Sonderup, a representative of the ad agency producing the advertisements.

Manziel is described as an “ex-pro football player” in his commercials. The former Heisman Trophy winner’s last experience on the field was a very short stint as the quarterback of the AAF’s Memphis Express. The team, and the league, folded earlier this year.

Some have speculated that Manziel would be an ideal target for Vince McMahon’s newly relaunched XFL. If that happens, it will be the fourth professional football league for the former Texas A&M star, following his stints in the NFL, CFL and AAF.

“We know that life doesn’t always go according to plan, and if there’s one thing that we all deserve, it’s a second chance. Our new campaign is at the heart of that belief,” said Kevin Fairchild, VP of customer experience and brand innovation at Direct Auto Insurance.
